Bowling Green Dominates Bulldogs In Dayton Flyer Classic Opener
December 28, 2008 | Women's Basketball
DAYTON, Ohio The Gardner-Webb women's basketball
team struggled in the opening minutes of play against Bowling Green
Sunday afternoon and by the time the Bulldogs began playing well,
BGSU's lead was too big as GWU lost 79-56 in the first game of the
Dayton Flyer Classic.
The Bulldogs fall to 5-5 on the season while the Falcons improve to
9-2 on the year.
GWU had a trio of players in double figures as Dominique Hudson led
the way with 13. Courtney Epps had 11 while LaTroya Pope chipped in
10. Margaret Roundtree pulled down six boards to go along with
seven points.
GWU fell behind early as the designated home squad posted four
straight points to open the contest. Fouls and sloppy defensive
play allowed BGSU to continue to get easy shots and multiple
charity tosses to open the contest.
In the first half alone GWU was whistled for nine fouls, seven of
which came in the first 12 minutes of play. That resulted into 16
foul shots for the Falcons and they converted 12 of them.
That was the biggest difference in the first half, which gave BGSU
a lead it would never relinquish.
The Bulldogs came out more aggressive in the second half, but still
struggled to stop the four-time defending MAC champions. BGSU
connected for 39 second-half points while GWU caught fire somewhat,
tossing in 35 in the final 20 minutes.
It was arguably the best game in terms of turnovers committed for
GWU on the season as the squad had just 11 miscues, but forced BGSU
into just seven. In the last couple of minutes of action, the
Falcons dropped in some easy buckets from their reserves to pad the
final margin.
For the game, BGSU connected on 28-of-67 attempts from the floor
while GWU hit 19-of-62 for 31 percent. The Falcons drained seven
three pointers while canning 16-of-20 charity tosses.
The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow afternoon at 5 p.m., when
they take on either Lipscomb or Dayton.
