Courtney Epps Stuns Lady Bison With Last Second Miracle

DAYTON, Ohio – Sophomore Courtney Epps gathered a Margaret Roundtree rebound with a second left in the game and bounced home a seven-foot shot with two tenths of a second remaining, giving the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team a 66-64 victory in the consolation game of the Dayton Flyer Classic.
With
the win, the Bulldogs improve to 6-5 while Lipscomb falls to
2-9.
Laura Povilonyte led the way for head coach Rick Reeves' team with
19 points as a quartet of players reached double figures in the
win. LaTroya Pope chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds while
Margaret Roundtree had 15. Epps' last-second shot gave her 10 for
the contest.
For the contest, GWU canned 47.4 percent of its shots in the win,
hitting 27-of-57. The team also notched a season-best 10 three
pointers, hitting on 66.7 percent of its attempts.
The Bulldogs opened up a 10-point advantage, overcoming an 11-point
deficit 4:43 into the game.
In the first few moments of the second half the Bulldogs went on a
run while Lipscomb went stone cold from the field, allowing the
team to get back into the contest.
In the first half, the Bulldogs once again started out slowly as
Lipscomb jumped on top by scoring the first seven points of the
game. GWU's Laura Povilonyte hit an easy bucket en route to seven
first-half points. Povilonyte has struggled the last two games,
hitting just one basket from the floor. However, she notched three
buckets to go along with four first-half rebounds.
Margaret Roundtree helped keep GWU close in the first stanza,
dropping in six points. LaTroya Pope had a quiet seven points, six
rebounds and a couple of blocks. Hurting the Bulldogs early on was
the constant turnovers as the Red and Black had two more turnovers
in the first half than the squad had all of the Bowling Green
game.
On multiple occasions GWU cut the deficit to four points after
facing a double-digit margin, but a three-pointer at the buzzer
made the score 30-23 at the break.
For the game, the Bulldogs committed 15 turnovers, but only two of
which came in the second half. The Bulldogs out-rebounded Lipscomb
by four and forced the team into 11 turnovers.
Lipscomb hit all 14 foul shots, but GWU connected on 24 points in
the paint while holding the home team to 18.
The Bulldogs return to action on Jan. 1 when they play host to Montreat in Paul Porter Arena prior to beginning conference competition.
