Lady Bulldogs Gain First Win at Home
February 11, 2008 | Women's Tennis
Boiling Springs, NC The Gardner-Webb women's team had a
great showing this past Saturday afternoon as they defeated
Appalachian State 5-2 at the Webb Tennis Facility. The victory
marks the first win of the season for the ladies and puts their
record at 1-4 against non-conference opponents.
It was all GWU in doubles competition as the ladies took all three
matches. The duo of Laura Kriett and Rita Gouveia pushed their
record to 2-2 in doubles action when they defeated ASU's Monica
Thomas and Mallory Cook 8-5. Senior Monica Walser and sophomore
Kasey Ellis also went to 2-2 on the season with an 8-4 victory over
ASU's Lindsay King and Amanda Cash.
Juniors Jenny Gomez and Amy Beavers finally broke through and
gained their first win in doubles action this season as they
defeated Elizabeth Holland and Heather Prior of ASU 8-2.
Coach Corn was very proud of how the ladies worked together in
their doubles bouts. He commented, "We stayed focused better today.
Every match we are getting better at closing out points and that is
a very good sign."
After taking all three doubles matches, the ladies carried a lot of
confidence into singles.
GWU No. 1 Laura Kriett got her second victory on Saturday afternoon
as she pushed past ASU's Monica Thomas 7-5, 6-0. The first set was
back and forth, neither girl wanting to give the other the
slightest edge. However, Kriett finally found that edge and shut
the door on Thomas to take the set 7-5. The second set was pure
dominance and Kriett rolled in the 6-0 win to take the match. The
victory puts Kriett at 2-3 on the season.
GWU No. 2 Jenny Gomez also played well in her singles bout on
Saturday. Gomez won both sets 6-2, 6-2 over ASU's Amanda Cash to
claim her fourth win in five matches. Gomez played very well to her
strengths and frustrated her opponent with long rallies and her
precision shot-making ability.
Gardner-Webb made it three in a row when newcomer Rita Gouveia
gained her first win of the season at the No. 3 position. Gouveia
defeated ASU's Lindsay King in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Gouveia's
win also ensured Gardner-Webb the victory with the fourth overall
point.
The match between No. 4 Monica Walser and ASU's Heather Prior was
thrilling to say the least. Walser came out in the first set on
fire and it seemed as if she couldn't do anything wrong. She won
the first set in dominating fashion, 6-1. However, Prior rebounded
in the second set. She broke Walser's serve midway through the set
and held on to win 6-4.
The third set tiebreaker went back and forth for a while until
Prior put several points together and eventually won the set 13-11
to take the match.
Amy Beavers pushed her record to 4-1 on the season with her 6-3,
6-2 victory over ASU's Elizabeth Holland at the No. 5 position.
Beavers and fellow junior Jenny Gomez lead the team with four wins
each. The two upperclassmen have played very well and been leading
by example during the first parts of the season.
Sophomore Kasey Ellis rounded out play at the sixth position for
the Lady Bulldogs. Ellis played well, but ASU's Carolina Mauch
seemed to have an answer for everything Ellis threw at her. Mauch,
who didn't paricipate in doubles, used her fresh energy to down
Ellis in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
After the match Coach Corn commented, "We got a great start by
getting the doubles point. That is the first match we have won all
three doubles. That gave us lots of confidence going into the
singles. The team used the wind to our advantage and didn't let it
bother us, which is a sign of maturity. ASU is a good team, so this
was a super win for us."
The ladies are back in action on February 12 at UNCC. Last year's
match was cancelled, but Tuesday's 2 pm start looks promising.
