Lady Bulldogs Pick Up Two Wins in Loss to Coastal Carolina

The Lady Bulldogs fell 5-2 to Coastal Carolina, the Big South
defending champions, on Saturday afternoon at the Webb Tennis
Facility. The loss moves Gardner-Webb to 1-5 on the season.
Coastal came off the bus ready to play, as they swept the Lady
Bulldogs in doubles play, taking an early 1-0 lead.
Gardner-Webb, who was coming off an earlier home win vs.
Appalachian State last Saturday, tried to battle back from an early
1-0 deficit but were denied by the Chanticleers in singles play.
Coastal went on to take four of the six singles bouts, ultimatley
defeating the Bulldogs 5-2.
Sophomore Laura Kriett continued her winning ways at the No. 1
position, as she defeated Lexi Bolesky of Coastal in two sets, 6-2,
3-3. Bolesky was forced to retire in the second set due to an
injury. The win was Kriett's second straight victory, third in four
matches.
Senior Monica Walser also picked up a win for the ‘Dogs on
Saturday afternoon, as she defeated CC's Fernanda Shalders in
straight sets 6-1, 7-6. Walser was down 3-4 in the second, but
rallied to win two straight points and placed the pressure on
Shalders. Shalders came back late to force a tiebreak, but Walser
showed good determination in the tiebreak and finished strong with
a 7-3 victory.
Junior Jenny Gomez had her four-match winning streak snapped, as
Gomez fell to 4-2 at the No. 2 spot with her 4-6, 6-0, 4-6 loss to
Amy Pazahanick of Coastal. Gomez was up 4-0 over the veteran
Pazahanick in the third set, but began getting impatient with
Pazahanick's slow play. Gomez got away from her game plan and the
senior from Coastal started chipping away at the lead. Pazahanick
eventually tied the match and then kept up the momentum to go ahead
and take the set 6-4.
The Lady Bulldogs will have next week off in preparation for a busy
weekend. They will host Georgia Southern on Saturday at noon, and
then Western Carolina comes into town on Sunday at 1 p.m.
