Bulldogs Shut Out At No. 51 Elon

The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team found themselves in a tough
non-conference battle on Sunday afternoon as they fell to the No.
51 nationally ranked Phoenix of Elon, 7-0.
Elon took the doubles point from the Bulldogs, winning two of the
three doubles bouts. The tandem of Andrew Veeder and Grant Van
Rensburg came away with the lone win for the ‘Dogs at the No.
2 doubles spot, defeating Elon's Oscar Podlewski and Chase
Helpingstine 8-6. At the No. 1 spot the squad of Evgeny Slesarev
and Carlos Quijano fell to the Phoenix's Damon Gooch and Philip
Nemec, 8-1, while the duo of Ryan Bernthal and Jamie Lawlor lost
8-4 to Alberto Rojas and Cody Stauffer at the No. 3 spot.
The Bulldogs' Slesarev played at the No. 1 spot, falling to the No.
72 nationally ranked player Damon Gooch of Elon in straight sets,
6-1, 6-4, while freshman Veeder was defeated by Elon's Podlewski at
the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 6-2.
Freshman Carlos Quijano was defeated at the No. 3 position by
Elon's Alberto Rojas in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, while Van Rensburg
lost 6-2, 6-0 to Nemec of the Phoenix. Fellow classmate Rafael
Altmayer was downed in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 to Helpingstine at
the fifth position.
Senior Taylor Ferrier put up the best fight of the day at the sixth
spot for the Bulldogs. Ferrier fought back from a 6-2 loss in the
first set to go deep into the second before ultimatley falling 7-5
to Elon's Kevin Beard.
The Bulldogs (3-5) are in action again this Monday, February 18,
where they will play host to Lees McRae. The match is scheduled to
start at 2 p.m.
