Men's Tennis Wins, 4-3, Thriller at Coastal

The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team won a, 4-3, thriller at
Coastal Carolina with No. 5 Grant Van Rensburg and No. 6 Taylor
Ferrier anchoring for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs pounced on the Chanticleers from the start, taking two
out of the three doubles bouts and winning the doubles point for an
early 1-0 lead. Sophomore sensation Evgeny Slesarev and Freshman
Carlos Quijano fought hard at the No. 1 doubles position, never
giving up and ultimately defeating Plamen Tzvetkov and Ernesto
Ramos of CCU, 8-6. The ‘Dogs duo of Grant Van Rensburg and
Andrew Veeder sealed the point for GWU as they dropped Coastal's
David Mellis and Dmitry Vlaskin 8-6 at the No. 2 position.
GWU's team of Ryan Bernthal and Jamie Lawlor lost a heartbreaker at
the third spot, 7-9, to Coastal's Joseph Withers and John
Hairston.
In singles play, Slesarev, Ferrier and Van Rensburg were able to
extend their winning streaks to two in a row. At the No. 5 spot,
Van Rensburg defeated Withers of Coastal by taking the first set
6-2, but failed to finish at Withers in the second set losing 1-6.
However, Van Rensburg bounced back in the third set 6-4 to
ultimately take the match.
Slesarev handily defeated Coastal's Dmitry Vlaskin at the one spot
(6-1, 6-1), while Senior leader Taylor Ferrier had a good win at
the six spot (6-4, 6-3) over Carlo Checchia.
The Bulldogs will look to add to their two-match winnng streak this
Tuesday, February 26, as they play host to the Appalchian State
Mountaineers. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m. at the Webb
Tennis Complex on the campus of Gardner-Webb.
