Lady Bulldogs Fall to Georgia Southern 5-2
February 24, 2008 | Women's Tennis
The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team fell, 5-2, to the Eagles of
Georgia Southern on Saturday afternoon at Webb Tennis Facility.
Georgia Southern began the match with a steal at doubles. The
Eagles won at both the No. 2 and 3 spots to take the doubles point.
The duo of Monica Walser and Allie Mills lost their match, 8-5, to
Matlosz and Knight of Georgia Southern while GWU's Amy Beavers and
Jenny Gomez let their match at the No. 2 spot slip through their
fingers.
The Eagles' Melanie Rolle and Ali Beavers rallied from being down
3-6 to eventually take the match 8-6. It was a hard fought match
that the lady Dogs could have easily taken but got away from
them in the end.
The lone win for the Bulldogs came from the team of Rita Gouveia
and Laura Kriett at the one spot. GWU's duo won their match 8-7 by
winning the tiebreaker 9-7. Although the match did not affect the
overall doubles outcome, it was a good win for the ladies and it
boosted their confidence heading into singles.
Sophomore Laura Kriett had a good win at the No. 1 singles spot for
the Bulldogs. Kriett dropped the first set 2-6 to Kristi Kegerreis
of Georgia Southern but rebounded in the second for a 7-6 win. With
good momentum heading into the third set Kriett put it away with a
6-4 third set win.
It was a big win for the Bulldogs seeing as Kriett battled back
while showing good determination.
The Bulldogs other win was recorded by Junior Amy Beavers at the
five spot. Beavers took care of business in the first with a 6-0
victory. She didn't let up much in the second, only dropping two
games on her way to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Georgia Southern's Shea
Hoxtable.
Saturday's match could have easily went in favor to the Bulldogs as
both Monica Walser and Jenny Gomez lost close games. Walser dropped
both the second and third sets in a loss at the four spot, while
Gomez won the second set but dropped the third in a loss at the two
spot. If the Dogs could have pulled out victories in those
matches, they would have taken the match 4-3.
Although the ladies did not get the win, it was a close match that
only gives them more experience to draw from.
Other notables: Rita Gouveia dropped her match 6-0, 6-0 at the
three spot and Allie Mills fell 6-0, 6-4 at the six spot. Freshman
Nicole Scates also dropped her exhibition 6-0, 6-4.
The Bulldogs don't have any rest before their next match as they
will host Western Carolina on Sunday afternoon. The match is
scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
