Lady Bulldogs Sweep Western at Home
February 25, 2008 | Women's Tennis
Boiling Springs, N.C. The Gardner-Webb Lady Bulldogs swept Western Carolina at home on Sunday afternoon. The Dogs took two of the three doubles matches and all six of the singles in route to a 7-0 victory.
Gardner-Webb won the doubles point with victories at the second and third spots. Juniors Jenny Gomez and Amy Beavers defeated WCU's Amanda Massey and Mariona Jane 8-6 at the two spot, while the Bulldog's tandem of Monica Walser and Allie Mills won their match, 8-3, over Emily Turke and Susanna Sjokuist at the three spot.
The Lady Bulldogs knew they had got off to a great start and showed great determination heading into singles competition.
Sophomore Allie Mills recorded her first win of the season on Sunday afternoon. Mills defeated WCU's Emily Turke in dominating fashion 6-1, 6-0. Junior Amy Beavers shortly followed with a big win of her own at the five spot, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Susanna Sjokuist.
GWU's Rita Gouveia got back on the winning track with a strong match at the three spot for the Bulldogs. Gouveia defeated WCU's Amanda Massey 6-1, 6-3 for her second win of the season.
Senior Monica Walser won her match at the four spot 6-2, 6-2 over Mariona Jane, while Jenny Gomez recorded a win at the two spot with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
Sophomore Laura Kriett added to her winning ways as she took her match at the one spot 6-4, 6-3. Kriett battled hard against WCU's Tessie Salame, but stuck to her game plan and pulled out a good win. The victory makes five out of her last six and a good contender for player of the week honors.
Freshman Nicole Scates also picked up a win in her exhibition match against WCU's Heather Bell. Scates dropped the first set, but rebounded nicely in the second to force a tiebreaker. She played strong in the tiebreaker and took the match 3-6, 6-3, 10-5.
After the match Coach Corn commented, "It was a good win for us today. Western came in and looked determined, and they showed it in doubles. I'm glad our girls stepped up to the challenge and played with some intensity during singles. All the girls played very well and they closed the matches early, which is something I have been stressing. If we play like this in Florida this weekend, we should be able to pick up some good wins."
The Lady Bulldogs will hit the road for a three-match road trip starting Thurday, when they will face-off with Stetson at 12 p.m. They will stay in the Sunshine state to play Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday and North Florida on Sunday.
