February 26, 2008 | Women's Golf
BUIES CREEK, N.C. After shooting a solid 322 on the first day of the Camel Spring Classic Monday, the Gardner-Webb golf team stayed in the same spot as the final day of the tournament was cancelled due to weather conditions. It marked the first tournament for the Bulldogs in the spring season.
GWU was the third-best Atlantic Sun Conference team in the tournament as the host Camels of Campbell won the event with a first-round total of 301. Kennesaw State was tied for fourth, just one stroke ahead of head coach Tee Burton's team. Elon was second, Memphis was third and Illinois State tied with the Owls for fourth.
Leading the way for Gardner-Webb was Yayoi Garcia, who finished in sixth place with a solid 77, five-over par effort.
The second-best golfer for the Bulldogs was Courtney Meyer, who shot a 40 on the front nine before coming home in 38 for a score of six-over par, 78. Meyer tied four others for 12th place.
Katie Garahan also improved over the last nine holes, turning in a 40 on the back portion of the course. Garahan opened with a 43, leaving her with an 83 for the round, which was good enough for a tie in 39th place.
Mackenzie Renner had a three-over par, 39, over the first nine holes, but was unable to sustain the momentum as she finished with an 84 for the round. Renner tied for 49th.
Rookie Liz Zouzal shot a 90 to tie for 70th.
The Bulldogs return to action March 3-4 when they travel to
nearby Wofford to compete in the Diet Coke Invitational.
