Panthers Drop Lady Bulldogs 4-2
February 05, 2008 | Women's Tennis
The Lady Bulldogs picked up two singles victories on Monday
afternoon but it wasn't enough as GWU fell to the High Point
Panthers 4-2 at the Webb Tennis Facility.
The two teams did not participate in doubles action due to the two
and a half hour rain delay. Instead, they began the match with
singles action.
The Bulldogs picked up two convincing victories at the No.2 and No.
5 singles, but the Panthers proved to be too much as they took the
other four singles bouts from the Dogs.
Junior Jenny Gomez won at the No. 2 singles position, as she easily
defeated the Panther's Kelly Tolman in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. The
win pushed Gomez's record to 3-1 at the No. 2 singles spot on the
year.
Fellow Junior Amy Beavers improved to 3-1 on the year as well.
GWU's No. 5 dominated in her match against Iris Shabetsberger,
winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
Senior Monica Walser lost a heartbreaker to High Point's Caroline
Mount at the No. 4 spot. It was all Walser in the first set, as she
won 6-0 in convincing fashion. Mount didn't take too kindly to that
and rebounded to take the next two sets 6-2, 6-0.
After the match Coach Corn commented, "It was another great college
match. We came up just a little short again, but we are getting
better. Once again we had lots of opportunities and either didn't
put the ball away or made an unforced error. We have to learn to
keep our foot on the gas pedal when we are winning. We have been
ahead in so many matches and then take our foot off the pedal and
let our opponent back in the match. At this level, you can't do
that."
The Ladies get to stay at home this week and prepare for App. St.
on Saturday, February 9. Saturday's match is scheduled to begin at
12 noon at the Webb Tennis Facility.
