The Lady Bulldogs Improve to 2-2 in A-Sun with 5-2 Win Over Mercer

The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team improved to 2-2 in the
conference with a 5-2 win over Mercer last Thursday. Junior Amy
Beavers improves her win streak to six games with a 6-0, 6-4 win at
the five spot.
Yet again, the Lady Bulldogs were forced to rely on their singles
play after they dropped all three doubles matches to the Bears.
Juniors Jenny Gomez and Amy Beavers made short work of their
singles opponents as both won 6-0, 6-4. Gomez needed a good win to
get back on track at the two spot, while Beavers continues to show
dominance at the five spot for the Bulldogs.
Senior Monica Walser also picked up a straight set 6-0, 6-2 victory
at the four spot for the Bulldogs.
GWU's No. 1 Laura Kriett battled hard with Mercer's Anna Wieslander
in the first set. The two ladies went back and forth with Kriett
prevailing in the tiebreaker to take the set 7-6. Kriett didn't
waste time in the second set and finished strong with a 6-2
win.
Rita Gouveia also had a tough match at the three spot for the
Bulldogs. Gouveia won the first set, 6-2, pretty convincingly, but
Mercer's Priscilla Dias got back in it with a 6-3 win in the second
set to force a third set tiebreaker. Gouveia battled hard in the
tiebreaker and her hard work paid off as she took the third set 7-5
for the win.
Gardner-Webb's match against Abraham Baldwin was cancelled, so the
Ladies will head to Kennesaw State on the 8th for their next match.
The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
