Gardner-Webb Women's Tennis Falls, 3-4, to Kennesaw State

The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team was handed its third loss
in conference play on Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs fell, 3-4,
to the Owls of Kennesaw State. The loss drops the Ladies to 2-3 in
the A-Sun and 4-9 overall.
The Lady Bulldogs' struggles continued at doubles as Kennesaw State
took all three doubles matches to start off the match 1-0. Juniors
Amy Beavers and Jenny Gomez had a close match at the two spot,
falling 7-8 (8-10), while GWU's team of Allie Mills and Monica
Walser also fell in a close match 7-9 at the three spot.
Gardner-Webb looked to mount a comeback in singles play as they had
several times before, but the Owls seemed determined to hold off
the Bulldogs.
Laura Kriett fought a hard match at the one spot for the Bulldogs.
Kriett took the first set 6-3, but Kennesaw's Mercedes Cobos played
tough in the second and pulled off a 7-5 win. Dropping the second
set seemed to only fired up Kriett as she came out in the third
with three straight games. After the third game Cobos was forced to
retire due to an injury, which gave Kriett the match.
Rita Gouviea also had a great match at the three spot for the
Bulldogs. She pulled out an impressive 2-6, 6-0, 6-2
come-from-behind win.
Amy Beavers also had a good showing at the five spot for the
Bulldogs as she lengthened her win streak to seven with a 6-3, 6-1
win over Kennesaw's Paula Takara.
However, the Owls matched the Bulldogs in singles with wins at the
two, four, and six spots to take the match 4-3.
The Ladies will have a week to rest before they host Jacksonville
on March 15. The match is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Webb Tennis
Complex.
