March 17, 2008 | Wrestling
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. Last weekend, Eddie McCray and Dustin Porter grappled their way to the 2008 NCAA Wrestling Championships. Earlier today, the duo found out their draws.
McCray, who will compete at 149, has a bye as does the student-athlete he will face in the second round of the Thursday morning session. McCray will take on Stanford's Lucas Espericueta, who garnered a 23-10 record on the year. McCray, a transfer who started wrestling with the Bulldogs after the semester break, has produced a 9-3 mark with four falls to his credit. In all 12 of his matches, McCray at one time or another has had his opponent on his back. McCray's quickest pin came in just 24 seconds against Kurtis Hess of Carson-Newman College on Feb. 14. His largest victory was a 14-7 decision coming against a Wagner student-athlete.
Porter also earned a bye in the first round of the Thursday morning session in the 197 lb. division. Porter, who garnered a 28-9 record on the season, will take on Kyle Bressler of Oregon State in the second round of the morning session. Bressler amassed a 14-8 mark on the year. Porter accounted for three falls and three major decision victories on the season. His 50 takedowns are second on the team. An experienced grappler, the redshirt-sophomore earned a spot at the NCAA Championships a season ago after winning the East Regional.
