Bulldogs Take Down Asheville 5-2

The men's tennis team advanced to 8-9 on the season with a 5-2 win over UNC-Asheville on Tuesday afternoon. GWU played well in singles by taking four of six and also won the doubles point by taking two of three.
The match began with singles play in hopes of the teams completing the match before bad weather approached. The weather held up and all six singles matches, as well as, all three doubles matches were able to be played.
Evgeny Slesarev won the first match on the day with a (6-1, 6-1) victory over Mauricio Correa at the one spot.
UNC-A tied the match at 1-1 when Andrew Veeder fell (5-7, 0-6) to Tyler Begg at the two spot.
Grant Van Rensburg came through for the ‘Dogs at the five spot with a (6-2, 6-2) victory over Innokentiy Sedov, which gave Gardner-Webb the lead 2-1.
UNC-A answered again with a win at the three spot. Joseph May took down Carlos Quijano (7-5, 6-2) to tie the match at 2-2.
Clutch play at the four spot by Rafael Altmayer allowed GWU to take the lead 3-2. Altmayer down Damien Snare (6-4, 7-5) after coming back from being several sets down.
Senior Taylor Ferrier put the match away with a three set victory at the six spot. After splitting the first two sets with Nicholas Thuell, Ferrier came through in the clutch with a 7-6 (7-4) victory in the third set tiebreaker.
Gardner-Webb went on to take two of the three doubles points for the 5-2 win.
Ryan Bernthal and Jamie Lawlor won their match at the two spot 8-5, while Josh Ray and Grant Van Rensburg took their match 8-1 at the three spot.
Coach Griffith commented, "It was a good win for us after coming off that emotional loss to Jacksonville on Sunday. The team showed a lot of poise by ignoring the conditions and focusing on the win. We could have easily lost this match, but the team played tough and we pulled out a good win."
The Bulldogs won't rest much as they hit the road to face Erskine on Thursday.
