Bulldogs Set All-Time Wins Record

The Gardner-Webb Men's Tennis team set a new record for most
wins in a season with its 11th win on Thursday afternoon. The
Bulldogs took down the Bisons of Lipscomb (6-1) to move to 11-9 on
the season and 3-3 in the A-Sun.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after winning all
three doubles matches.
Evgeny Slesarev and Andrew Veeder downed Lipscomb's Daniel
Hangstefer and Mario Hernandez (8-2) at the No.1 slot, while Ryan
Bernthal and Jamie Lawlor won at the No. 2 slot (8-6) over Andy
Mizell and Josh Cummings of Lipscomb. Joshua Ray and Grant Van
Rensburg made it a perfect 3-3 after taking down the Bison team of
Joe McArdle and Jeff West (8-5) at the No. 3 slot.
Evgeny Slesarev improved his record to 13-5 in singles action with
a [7-6 (7-3), 6-1) win over Daniel Hangstefer at the No. 1 slot.
Slesarev has been on a tear as of late, winning 11 of his last 13
matches at the No. 1 slot.
Senior Taylor Ferrier was the first Bulldog to finish on Thursday
as he made short work of Lipscomb's James Murrell (6-0, 6-2) at the
No. 6 slot. The win gives Ferrier 10 wins at the six slot and
improves his record to 13-7 overall.
Andrew Veeder picked up a good win at the No. 2 slot with a (6-0,
6-3) decision over Jeff West. Veeder moves to 8-10 at the No. 2
position with five matches left potentially.
Rafael Altmayer became the Bulldog who clinched the match yet
again. Altmayer downed Josh Cummings (6-1, 6-3) at the No. 3 slot
to give the Bulldogs the match with three positions still
playing.
Grant Van Rensburg clinched a win at the No. 5 slot, winning (6-2,
7-5) over Mario Hernandez. Van Rensburg moves to 8-6 at the No. 5
slot and 10-10 overall.
Carlos Quijano faced a tough opponent at the No. 4 slot. Joe
McArdle took the first set 6-4, but Quijano played hard in the
second and forced a tiebreaker. Quijano played well in the
tiebreaker, but McArdle was too much and took the tiebreaker 8-6 to
win the match.
In attendance for the record-setting occasion was Gardner-Webb
alumni Lisa Handzus-Rollins. Over the course of her stay at
Gardner-Webb, Lisa won over 100 matches for the Lady Bulldogs and
graduated in 2003 with the Presidential Award. She is currently
living in Austin, Texas.
After the match Coach Griffith commented, "We started the match
with a lot of intensity in doubles. I could tell our guys were
fired up and wanted to get that 11th win. I am proud of how we
handled ourselves and applaud the effort that each of them showed
out there today."
The Bulldogs will host Belmont on Saturday, March 29th starting at
10 am at the Webb Tennis Complex.
