Brusich Establishes School Record While Multiple Athletes Notch Personal-Best Marks At Winthrop Invitational

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Evan Brusich set the school record in the decathlon Saturday afternoon while numerous Gardner-Webb student-athletes posted personal-best times and marks on the middle day of the Asics Winthrop Invitational.
Brusich won the 1,500m event and was second in the discus and 110m hurdles en route to his school-record setting mark.
Senior Lucas McAneney won the 5,000m event in a personal-best time of 15:11.50. The time was just off the school record. Joshua Hudson took fifth (15:44.83) and Alex Nimmo finished sixth (15:49.79) in a well-ran race by the Bulldogs.
Multi-event student-athlete Johnathon Rucker recorded a personal-best time of 15.25 to finish 10th in the 110m hurdles. Rucker later finished 25th in the 400m with a time of 51.08.
Two personal bests fell for GWU student-athletes in the hammer throw. Matt Knippen recorded a throw of 47.48m (155'9") while Brandon Blanton had a mark of 40.88m (134'1"). Knippen finished seventh while Blanton notched a 15th-place finish.
Paul Steinke crossed in a personal-best time of 50.71 to finish 23rd in the 400m. He also placed 30th in the 200m (23.42).
On the women's side, Victoria Argus won the heptathlon while teammate Kayla Morgan placed second. Argus won the long jump and javelin.
In the pole vault, rookie Carrie Long led the way with a personal-best vault of 3.50m (11'7.75") to finish fourth. Kelly Bridges was fifth (3.40m – 11'1.75"), Merissa Hawkins was 11th (2.95m – 9'8") and Meg Barrow was 14th (2.65m – 8'8.25").
In the longest event of the meet, the 10,000m, Carrie Minard posted a personal-best time of 42:52.21 to take sixth in the competition. It marked the second consecutive meet that Minard has posted a personal-best time in an event.
Allye Littrell crossed in a personal-best time in the 5,000m, notching a time of 20:50.83 for 21st. Just ahead of her was rookie Laura Scott, who crossed in 17thth-place finish. place with a time of 20:20.99. Rebecca Silleman had a time of 21:11.45 to earn a 25th-place finish.
Two GWU student-athletes had top-20 marks in the hammer throw. Caryn Daane boasted an effort of 39.60m (129'11") to place 16th. Brieanna Thompson was 20th with a toss of 37.66m (123'7").
The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow on the final day of the competition.
