Bruins Hold Off Bulldogs to Win 4-3 in Women's Tennis Action

The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team fought hard to get back on
the right track on Saturday afternoon, but the Belmont Bruins held
on to defeat the Lady Bulldogs 4-3 at the Webb Tennis Complex.
In doubles action, the Lady Bulldogs dropped the visiting team at
the No. 1 doubles position, as the GWU duo of Laura Kriett and
Monica Walser defeated Belmont's team of Linda Johansson and
Tatiana Pozo 8-5. However, Belmont would go on to take both the No.
2 and No. 3 doubles matches to take the doubles point and an early
1-0 lead.
In the end the doubles point would prove to be the difference as
the two teams would split the six singles bouts. Gardner-Webb would
win at the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 spots, while Belmont downed the
‘Dogs at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 positions.
Sophomore Laura Kriett extended her winning streak to six straight
matches at the No. 1 slot, as she defeated Linda Johansson of
Belmont in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Junior Amy Beavers made easy work of Katie Rhodes with a 6-1, 6-0
win at the No. 3 position. With the win, Beavers remains undefeated
in conference play, improving to 8-0 on the season. The win also
extends her win-streak to 10 matches.
Senior Monica Walser battled hard at the No. 5 spot, as she
defeated the Bruins Lindsay Bennett 7-5, 6-2.
With the loss Gardner-Webb falls to 3-5 in the A-sun and 6-11
overall.
The Lady Bulldogs will look to get back on the right track Tuesday,
April 1 when they will do battle with UNC-Asheville at 2:00
p.m.
