Men's Tennis Starts 1-2 in Conference Play

The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team recorded one win and two losses during its road trip in Florida. The Bulldogs dropped their conference opener, 1-6 to #75 Stetson on Thursday, but rebound nicely for a 4-3 win over Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday. The road trip came to an end on Sunday as the Bulldogs fell hard to North Florida, 0-7.
GWU's Evgeny Slesarev was the only Bulldog to record a win in the conference opener at Stetson. Slesarev defeated Stetson's Marcus Echtler in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 to extend his streak to three straight at the one spot.
The Bulldogs dropped the doubles point at the start of the Florida Gulf Coast match. Ryan Bernthal and Jamie Lawlor was the lone duo to get a win in doubles for the ‘Dogs. They defeated the team of Edson Lima and Gonzalo Rafeal De Villa 8-2 at the three spot.
In singles, Slesarev's streak excelled to four after he defeated Florida Gulf Coast's Brenton Bacon 6-4, 6-4. Andrew Veeder also picked up a good 6-4, 6-1 win at the two spot over FGCU's Andrew Kam.
The Bulldogs dropped both the three and four spots, but evened the match at 3-3 when Taylor Ferrier closed out FGCU's De Villa 6-2, 6-0 at the six spot.
With the match tied at 3-3, it all came down to whomever won the five spot. GWU's Grant Van Rensburg won the first set 6-3, but FGCU's Edson Lima answered right back with a 6-3 win of his own in the second set to force a tiebreaker.
Van Rensburg rose to the occasion in the tiebreaker with a 6-4 win, which gave Gardner-Webb the match 4-3.
Gardner-Webb tried to keep up the momentum heading into North Florida, but UNF had other plans. The Ospreys took an early 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches. The Bulldog duo of Slesarev and Quijano was the only team to win in doubles as they won 8-3 at the one spot.
It didn't get any better in singles play as UNF swept all six matches for a 7-0 win.
Slesarev had a very close match at the one spot, but fell in three sets 3-6, 7-5, 1-6 to UNF's Eduardo Pereira.
Although the Bulldogs' road trip is over, they won't get much rest as they host UNCC on Monday. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Webb Tennis Complex.
