Men's Tennis Falls, 3-4, to UNCC

The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team fought a hard match but UNCC proved to have the better team on Monday afternoon. After UNCC won the doubles point, the two teams split singles play 3-3. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 6-8 on the season.
Evgeny Slesarev got back on the winning track Monday afternoon as he took down Charlotte's Felix Bernhoerster 6-2, 6-1. The win gave Slesarev three in his last four matches.
Andrew Veeder picked up a good win at the two spot as he downed ex-Bulldog Brad Clinard 6-3, 6-4.
Rafael Altmayer put in a good performance on Monday afternoon at the four spot for the Bulldogs. Altmayer dominated the first set 6-2, but UNCC's Ricky Cuellar notched the match in the second with a 7-5 win. The second set loss seemed to fire up Altmayer as he rebounded in the third for a 6-4 victory. Although his match would not have changed the ending result, Altmayer showed great determination and it was a good morale victory for the sophomore.
The Bulldogs dropped the three, five and six spots, which gave UNCC the overall 4-3 win.
After the match Coach Mike Griffith commented, "Charlotte played better than us today in doubles and did better at crunch time. That was the difference in the match today. We have learned a lot about ourselves today and we showed a lot of determination in singles. We are in great shape and are looking forward to Mercer on Thursday."
Gardner-Webb hits the road again for a conference match at Mercer on Thursday. The two teams are fairly evenly matched and it should be an exciting match to watch. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
