FT. MYERS, Fla. Gardner-Webb dropped two games Saturday
at A-Sun newcomer Florida Gulf Coast Saturday, losing to the Eagles
by scores of 10-2 and 7-1.
The Diamond Dogs (4-7, 0-6 A-Sun) dropped the series opener
by a 6-3 score Friday night.
Gardner-Webb is off to its worst start in league play since joining
the Atlantic Sun Conference for the 2003 season. The road doesn't
get any easier in the Bulldogs' final season of A-Sun play, as
preseason favorite Stetson rolls into Boiling Springs for another
three-game series next weekend.
Florida Gulf Coast (11-2, 5-1 A-Sun) rolled past GWU in the opener,
touching the Bulldog pitching staff for 17 hits and 10 runs
all earned. Adam Bullard (1-2) allowed five runs and seven hits in
3.0 innings of work, and reliever Wes Cogdill was roughed up for
five more runs and nine hits in 3.2 innings out of the bullpen.
Gardner-Webb managed just five hits in the loss, with Brock Miller
going 2-for-4 to pace that effort.
The nightcap was a defensive struggle for the nine from Boiling
Springs, as four errors led to six unearned runs in a 7-1 loss.
Starter Jonathon Ban (0-2) was the victim of the defensive miscues
on the mound, taking the loss despite working hard through 6.0
innings. The Marrietta, Ga., righty scattered seven hits and fanned
four without allowing an earned run to cross.
A four-run first inning was all the offense FGCU would need in the
nightcap. The Eagles had 10 hits and saw a strong pitching
effort limit Gardner-Webb to only six. Freshman Aaron Miller went
2-for-4 in his first career start at second base to pace GWU.
