Men's Tennis Acquires Fifth Seed in 2008 A-Sun Tournament

The Gardner-Webb Men's Tennis team will be the fifth seed in the
2008 Atlantic Sun Tournament hosted by ETSU. The Bulldogs will face
off with the fourth seeded Jacksonville Dolphins in the first round
at 4:30 pm on Friday, April 18.
When these two teams met back in March, it arguably the ‘Dogs
closest match of the season. The two teams split singles at 3-3,
but JU won two of the three doubles bouts for a 4-3 victory. In the
deciding doubles bout, JU won 9-8(4) at the No. 1 slot.
The key victories in singles for the Bulldogs came at the No. 1, 5,
and 6 slots.
Sophomore Evgeny Slesarev defeated a very good player in JU's Jordi
Ballester at the No. 1 slot 6-4, 3-6, 7-6. That was a big win for
Slesarev because it extended his win streak and also made him more
noticeable for all-conference honors.
Sophomore Grant Van Rensburg also had a good win at the No. 5 slot.
He took down the Dolphin's Vinny Craveiro 6-3, 6-3.
Senior Taylor Ferrier also recorded a win that day with a 6-2, 6-4
performance over Alberto Lopez at the No. 6 slot.
Freshman sensation Andrew Veeder went three sets with
Jacksonville's Victor Vaz at the No. 2 slot, but fell 2-6, 6-2,
2-6.
The GWU duo of freshman Josh Ray and Van Rensburg was the only to
get a win in doubles, winning 8-4 at the No. 3 slot. Jamie Lawlor
and Ryan Bernthal had a good showing, but fell 8-6 at the No. 2
slot.
As far as the tournament match-up goes, Coach Griffith commented,
"I believe this match could come down to the doubles point again,
so we need to come out strong and ready to play on Friday."
