The Gardner-Webb Women's Tennis team obtained the sixth seed in
the 2008 Atlantic Sun Tournament hosted by ETSU. The Lady Bulldogs
will face off with the third seeded Stetson Hatters in the first
round on Friday, April 18 at 2:00 pm.
The last time these two teams met was the Lady Bulldogs' conference
opener on February 28. The Hatters won that match 6-1 by sweeping
the doubles bouts and taking five of six in singles.
The only Bulldog that gained a win that day was junior Amy Beavers.
Beavers won her match at the No. 5 slot 6-2, 6-2 to extend her once
win streak to three matches.
Sophomore Laura Kriett played a close match at the No. 1 slot, but
fell in straight sets 4-6, 5-7 to All-Conference nominee Valentina
Galbarini.
Stetson finished the season with an 8-3 mark in conference play and
will prove a tough opponent for the Dogs who finished
3-8.
After talking with Coach Corn, he really wants the team to come out
with some intensity early. "We need to establish ourselves and let
the other team know that we are here to play. The doubles point is
crucial, and if we can get an early lead it puts more pressure on
the other team. Hopefully we will have a good showing; I have no
doubt that our girls will give it their best."
