Six Take Home Titles At Catamount Classic

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Six Gardner-Webb student-athletes brought home titles at the Western Carolina Invitational while many others posted top-five performances Friday.
On the women's side, Carrie Long won the pole vault, Elizabeth Maxwell won the discus and Caryn Daane won the shot put while Dobson Collins, Jeremy Longshore and Matt Knippen won the 110m hurdles, pole vault and shot put, respectively, on the men's side.
Long won the pole vault with her second-best performance of the outdoor season, clearing 3.49m (11'5.25"). Kelly Bridges also earned a spot on the podium, taking silver with a height of 3.34m (10'11.50"). Merissa Hawkins was fourth while Meghan Barrow garnered seventh.
Caryn Daane recorded a season-best heave in her winning shot put effort of 12.32m (40'5"). Eliazabeth Maxwell's discus throw of 39.42m (129'4") was just shy of her school-record performance from a week ago, but it was good enough to take home the title this week. Tabitha Hamilton was fourth in the event with a mark of 34.12m (111'11").
Three student-athletes were just off gold-medal performances. Maxwell was second in the hammer throw with a mark of 46.13m (151'4"). Junior Sarah Wyszynski speared a second-place effort in the javelin with a throw of 36.41m (119'5"). In the running events, Diana Palka crossed in second in the 3,000m steeplechase, finishing in 13:19.55.
In the hammer throw, Daane was fourth with a mark of 41.68m (136'9") while Victoria Argus and Ashley Hall were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the javelin. Argus threw 30.53m (100'2") while Hall had a performance of 30.37m (99'8").
Kayla Morgan and Laura Scott earned bronze medals. Morgan took third in the high jump (1.47m – 4'9.75") as well as the 100m hurdles (15.26). Scott was third in the 3,000m, finishing in 11:42.77.
Allye Littrell and Rebecca Silleman also crossed the finish line in the 3,000m in the top five. Littrell was fourth in 11:59.77 while Silleman finished in 12:15.04. Argus placed fifth in the high jump with a height of 1.42m (4'7.75").
Beth Long had two fourth-place efforts for the day. Long was fourth in the 200m (27.58) and in the 400m (1:01.87).
Longshore's winning performance of 4.80m (15'9) was his best performance of the outdoor season. Adam Reed also took fifth in the event after clearing 4.24m (13'11").
Knippen's mark of 15.50m (50'10.25") in the shot put not only allowed him to win the event, but it was also the longest heave of the outdoor season for him. Collins won the 110m hurdles in a near school-record time of 14.66. Johnathon Rucker took the bronze in the event with a time of 15.09.
Tim Israel placed second in the 1,500m, crossing in 4:03.99. Knippen's throw of 45.72m (150') was also good enough for silver. Brandon Blanton garnered fourth in the hammer with a mark of 41.21m (135'2"). Rucker was second in the high jump, clearing 1.93m (6'4").
Knippen, Lucas McAneney and Bryant Davis all took home third-place finishes in their respective events. Knippen was third in the discus with a mark of 41.35m (135'8"). McAneney placed third in the 3,000m with a time of 9:05.23 while Joshua Hudson was fourth with a time of 9:12.71. Davis was third in the long and triple jump events. In the long jump, he had a mark of 6.41m (21'0.50") while posting an effort of 13.20m (43'3.75") in the triple jump. Justin Keziah was fourth in the long jump with a mark of 4.86m (15'11.50").
Brothers Charlie and Paul Steinke each finished fourth in their respective events. Paul Steinke was fourth in the 400m (50.79) while Charlie Steinke crossed in fourth in the 800m (1:58.91). Alex Nimmo took fifth in the event (1:59.63). Keziah and McAneney were sixth and seventh, respectively.
Justin O'Shields threw the javelin 46.29m (151'10"), good enough for fifth. Adam Reed was sixth (46.04m – 151") while Keziah took ninth (40.43m – 132'8").
The Bulldogs return to action on April 26, when they travel to the Troy Invitational.
