Bulldogs Pull Off First Round Upset to Advance to Semifinals
April 19, 2008 | Men's Tennis
The Gardner-Webb Men's Tennis team pulled off the only upset of opening day Friday evening after rallying back from a 1-0 deficit and posting four consecutive singles victories. Jacksonville won two of the three doubles matches to open play, but Gardner-Webb did not drop a set in the four pointed singles matches to notch the upset.
Grant Van Rensburg dropped Marcos Oliveira 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 4 position, and Taylor Ferrier and Carlos Quijano won 7-6(0), 6-2 and 6-1, 6-4, respectively. First-Team All-Conference selection Evgeny Slesarev closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at No.1.
After the match Coach Griffith commented, "It was just a lot of heart. Our players worked hard and you know you have to complement JU. They fought hard too and it was just a great college atmosphere."
As far as Griffith being concerned about the #1 ranked ETSU Buccaneers, Griffith went onto say, "Well obviously they are talented and well coached, but we're Juggernauts too. We're ready and we're coming."
The semifinal match between GWU and ETSU is scheduled for 9:00 am Saturday morning.
