Bulldogs Fall to East Carolina, 5-2

The GWU men's tennis team battled hard against the ECU Pirates
before ultimately falling to the visitors, 5-2. The loss knocks the
Bulldogs to 12-10 overall, while ECU goes to 12-5 on the
season.
The Pirates took an early 1-0 lead by winning two of the three
doubles bouts. Gardner-Webb's only win came from the hard-hitting
Bulldog duo of Evgeny Slesarev and Andrew Veeder, as they won (8-5)
over the Pirate's Jaroslav Horvath and Henrique Viana at the No. 1
slot.
At the No. 2 position, the team of Ryan Bernthal and Jamie Lawlor
battled hard before falling to ECU's team of Henrik Skalmerud and
Aleksey Kochetov, 8-6, while the tandem of Josh Ray and Grant Van
Rensberg lost an exciting match at the No. 3 spot, 9-7.
In singles play, Gardner-Webb picked up wins from Evgeny Slesarev
(6-3, 6-0) and Rafael Altmayer (6-2, 3-6, 6-1) at the first and
third spots, respectively, scoring the only two points on the
afternoon for the ‘Dogs. Slesarev has won an eye-raising 14
matches this year at the No. 1 slot and is currently sporting a
seven-match win streak.
Freshman Andrew Veeder played tough at the No. 2 slot for the
Bulldogs. Veeder had a chance, but fell (5-7) after dropping two
set points in the first set. ECU's Henrique Viana capitalized in
the second set and won the match (7-5, 6-3).
After the match Coach Griffith commented, "The doubles matches were
of good quality. We missed just a couple of opportunities and ECU
capitalized on our misses. My hat goes off to ECU because they
deserve this win. I can tell we are improving and our doubles is
getting better."
The Bulldogs will take a road trip to Spartanburg, S.C. on Friday
where they will play USC-Upstate in A-Sun action. The match is
scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
