Gardner-Webb Drops Two in A-Sun Play

The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team dropped two conference
matches this past weekend to move to 4-5 in the A-Sun. The Bulldogs
faced off with the top two teams in the conference, USC-Upstate
(7-1) and ETSU (9-0).
The Bulldogs traveled to Spartanburg, S.C. on Friday, April 4th for
some conference action with the Spartans of USC-Upstate.
The Spartans jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after taking two of
three in doubles competition. Gardner-Webb's team of Evgeny
Slesarev and Andrew Veeder gained the only win in the doubles bouts
for the Bulldogs as they defeated the Spartans' duo of Sebastian
Gonzales-Orbegoso and Leandro Osorio 9-8 at the No. 1 slot.
Upstate finished the match by taking four of the six singles
matches before the rain came.
Sophomore Evgeny Slesarev did not get to finish his match against
Sandy Franz, but was up in the second set 4-2 when the match was
called. Fellow sophomore Grant Van Rensburg was also in his second
set when the match was called.
After the match, the Bulldogs packed up and headed to Johnson City,
TN where they met the #46 nationally ranked ETSU Buccaneers.
With Gardner-Webb showing a lighter line-up, the Buccaneers swept
both the doubles and singles bouts for a 7-0 victory. The win moves
the Bucs into first place in the A-Sun with a 9-0 record, while the
loss brings the Bulldogs back to .500 for the season (12-12).
The men will rest a few days before heading to Buies Creek, N.C.
where they will play an important match against the Camels of
Campbell. With a win at Campbell and a Jacksonville loss, the
Bulldogs could clinch fourth place in the A-Sun Tournament (April
18-20).
