Lady Bulldogs Drop Two Over the Weekend

The Gardner-Webb Lady Bulldogs move to 3-7 in the A-Sun with
losses to USC-Upstate and East Tennessee State this past weekend.
Upstate and ETSU remain perfect in the A-Sun, both holding a 7-0
record at the top spot.
The Bulldogs' first match came at USC-Upstate on Friday, where the
6-0 Spartans added a ‘W' to their A-Sun record by downing the
‘Dogs 5-0.
Due to rain clouds in the area, the two teams began the match with
singles play in hopes of determining an early winner. Upstate wound
up winning five of the six singles matches and the match was called
shortly after.
The closest match of the day came at the No. 3 slot between GWU's
Rita Gouveia and Upstate's Emilia Milovanovic. Both girls fought
hard every point and Milovanvic eventually took the match 7-6(3),
7-6(2) over the freshman Bulldog.
Sophomore Laura Kriett also had a tough match as she fell in three
sets to the Spartans' Anna Novo at the No. 1 slot. The loss ends
Kriett's win streak at six matches.
The only match not to finish came at the No. 4 slot between Amy
Beavers and Daniela Lovera.
The Lady Bulldogs didn't get much time to shake off the loss as
they hosted ETSU on Sunday afternoon. ETSU was also atop the A-Sun
with a 6-0 record so the Bulldogs had their work cut out for
them.
The ‘Dogs got down early as ETSU took all three doubles bouts
for a 1-0 lead.
The Buccaneers did not let up in singles play, taking five of the
six matches to record their 7th conference win.
Senior Monica Walser was the only Bulldog to record a win on
Sunday. She won her bout at the No. 5 slot 3-6, 6-4 (10-6) over
ETSU's Andra Voinea.
GWU's No. 1 and No. 3 both lost their matches in three sets to the
Buccaneers. Laura Kriett fell at the No. 1 slot 7-6, 6-2, 6-4,
while freshman Rita Gouveia dropped her match 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 at the
No. 3 slot.
The Ladies will have a couple of days to shake off these tough
losses before heading to Buies Creek, N.C. to face Campbell on
Wednesday, April 9th. Wednesday's match will be the last conference
match before the A-Sun Tournament on April 18-20.
