Bridges Shatters School Record And Langley Claims First Place At Liberty Twilight Meet

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Senior Jerel Langley seemed to be right at home as he registered his third first-place finish of the outdoor season Thursday evening at the Liberty Twilight Meet. However, it was junior Kelly Bridges that stole the show as she vaulted her way into the record book – again.
Bridges bested her own personal-best vault, which was the previous school record mark by clearing 3.65m (12'). For her efforts, Bridges came in third at the meet.
Langley posted top honors in the javelin with a throw of 60.77m (188'4"). It marked Langley's second consecutive first-place finish in the javelin and his second consecutive meet he has thrown 60.77m as he did so last week while winning the Radford Invitational.
Senior Matt Knippen, the reigning A-Sun Athlete of the Week, recorded a heave of 15.24m (50') in the shot put, earning him silver medal accolades. He also posted a seventh-place performance in the hammer throw with a mark of 43.90m (144').
Lucas McAneney was just off the medal podium while nearly besting the school record he holds in the 5,000m event. McAneney crossed the line in fourth place with a time of 15:11.38.
Johnathon Rucker also earned a fourth-place mark. However, his effort was in the high jump. Rucker cleared 1.93m (6'4") at the meet. Jeremy Longshore vaulted 4.90m (16'0.75") for a fourth-place showing.
Alex Nimmo came close to breaking the four-minute mark in the 1,500m. Nimmo's sixth-place effort was in a time of 4:03.66. Tim Israel was right on his heels, claiming seventh in 4:06.67.
On the women's side, rookie Carrie Long, the reigning A-Sun Athlete of the Week, claimed fourth place in the pole vault with an effort of 3.50m (11'6"). Teammate Merissa Hawkins posted a fifth-place performance by clearing 3.35m (11').
Caryn Daane nabbed second place in the shot put with a heave of 11.72m (38'5.50"). Freshman Tabitha Hamilton was sixth in the event with a mark of 11.12m (36'5.75").
Hamilton also performed well in the discus, recording a mark of 35.46m (116'4"). The effort was good enough for fourth.
Senior Elizabeth Maxwell had a solid effort in the hammer throw. Maxwell's effort of 43.76m (143'7") was good enough for the bronze medal.
Junior Sarah Wyszynski was the top GWU performer in the javelin. Wyszynski finished just off the medal stand by taking fourth. She chucked the javelin 35.43m (116'3"). Maxwell also took part of the event for the first time this spring in an effort to prepare for the A-Sun Championships. She took seventh with a mark of 30.46m (99'11"), which was just ahead of eighth-place finisher Ashley Hall. Hall had a mark of 30.17m (99').
Kayla Morgan tied for fourth place in the 100m hurdles after bettering her preliminary time by 16-hundredths of a second in the finals. She had a time of 15.50 for the event.
The Bulldogs will now break for final exams before preparing for the conference championships May 16-17 in Clemson, S.C.
