Miller Leads Mother's Day Sweep Of Norfolk State

BOILING SPRINGS – Junior Brock Miller went a combined
6-for-8 at the plate with three steals, three extra base hits and
six runs scored to pace Gardner-Webb's sweep of a Mother's Day
twinbill over Norfolk State, 14-9 and 11-5.
The Diamond ‘Dogs (25-26) fell behind in the opener after a
three-error inning allowed the Spartans four unearned runs –
and a 6-2 lead – but GWU plated six runs in the sixth and five
more in the seventh to build a 14-6 lead that would stick.
Miller went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two stolen bases and three
runs scored in the opener to pace Gardner-Webb's 15-hit attack. Ty
Boyles (3-for-4, 2 2B, 3B, RBI), Bubbie Spake (2-for-4, 2 2B, 4
RBI) and Jeremiah Lokken (2-for-3, 2 RBI) also had multi-hit games
for the Diamond ‘Dogs.
Ryan Maxa (4-2) worked 4.0 innings in relief for the win, allowing
just one run on four hits. Kyle Paeplow and Chase Bubley closed out
the game, which saw Ben Campbell start and allow just one unearned
run in a no decision.
Norfolk State (21-22) scored only three earned runs in the game.
The Spartans had 12 hits, with John Boyd III, Chase Bailey and
Anselmo Cantu each collecting two. Leon Schabacker (5-6) took the
loss, allowing eight runs in 5.0 innings of work.
GAME TWO
Gardner-Webb scored four runs in the bottom of the first, with
Bubbie Spake's two-run home run the big blow, and cruised to an
11-5 victory in seven innings.
The ‘Dogs pounded out 11 hits in the short game, with Miller
leading the way again by going 3-for-4 with a triple a steal and
three runs scored. Spake (2-for-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) was the only
other GWU player with more than one hit, with his 12th home run of
the season going out deep to right – into the teeth of a 20
mph wind – to the opposite field.
Gardner-Webb added two runs in the second, three runs in the third
and single runs in the fourth and fifth to pad its lead.
Wes Cogdill (4-1) got the win, going 3.0 innings on a predetermined
pitch count. Paeplow and Michael Lewis closed out the game with
scoreless relief in the sixth and seventh.
Horace Smith III took the loss, lasting just 2.1 innings and
allowing nine runs (eight earned) on seven hits. Moriba George went
3-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored to pace Norfolk State's
nine-hit attack.
Gardner-Webb will return to action on Thursday, as they close out
the 2008 A-Sun regular season by hosting North Florida on Varsity
Field.
