June 04, 2008 | Men's Basketball
BOILING SPRINGS Gardner-Webb's 12 men's basketball
scholarship players combined for a strong academic semester in
2008, forging a combined 3.05 grade point average.
Eight of the 12 student-athletes on scholarship earned an average
of 3.00 or higher, paced by junior point guard Aaron Linn's perfect
4.00.
Linn (Lenexa, Kan.) duplicated his classroom efforts from the Fall,
2007, semester and after averaging 12.5 points and dishing
off 107 assists on the court should be a strong candidate
for Academic All-America honors for the 2008-2009 season.
Recent graduate Thomas Sanders (Sugarland, Texas) continued his
strong academic performance as well, forging a 3.65 semester grade
point average. The Atlantic Sun Conference's Player of the Year and
an honorable mention Associated Press All-America selection
averaged 18.1 points and 10.8 rebounds per game as a senior on the
hardwood.
He was a first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III
selection as well, Gardner-Webb's second men's basketball player to
earn that honor since 2004-2005 (Brian Bender, 2005). Sanders is
currently in the process of pursing a career in professional
basketball.
All eight student-athletes who earned at least a 3.00 semester GPA
will be included on the Atlantic Sun Conference Academic
All-Conference list later this year for the most recent
semester.
Gardner-Webb will begin competition in the Big South Conference
during the 2008-2009 season.
