CHARLOTTE, N.C. The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team was selected seventh in the Big South Conference preseason poll, as voted on by the league's coaches.
The Big South coaches voted Coastal Carolina as the preseason favorite. Coastal Carolina tallied 90 overall points, 30 of which came with first-place votes. High Point (83 points), Liberty (75 points) and Charleston Southern (73 points) each netted at least one first-place vote en route to the squads' second, third and fourth-place finishes in the preseason poll.
Radford (56 points) took the fifth spot in the poll while Winthrop notched 52 points, just edging out Gardner-Webb for the sixth position. Head coach Kevin Mounce's team totaled 50 overall points.
UNC-Asheville (32 points), fellow league newcomer Presbyterian (22 points) and VMII (17 points) rounded out the eighth through 10th spots in the poll.
The Bulldogs, which return eight starters, are entering their first year in the conference after leaving the Atlantic Sun Conference on June 30, 2008. GWU returns first-team all-Atlantic Sun member Angie Harvey while junior Karissa Jensen, an A-Sun second-team selection, bolsters the defense.

begins at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs open the regular season in front of
their home fans on Friday, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m., against Georgia
