
Bulldogs Fall To UNC-Wilmington, 2-0

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team was unable to put the ball in the back of net Friday evening, mustering just three shots on frame in the 2-0 loss to UNC-Wilmington in front of 318 fans at Greene-Harbison Stadium.
The Bulldogs fall to 1-2 on the young season and are still looking for their first home win of the year.
Just 59 seconds into the contest, UNCW's Kelly Renkin fired a goal past Jessica Tuggle on a give-and-go, rocketing the ball into the lower left corner for a 1-0 lead. The goal was assisted by Erin Pardini.
GWU had a chance to tie the scorein the fifth minute when Dawn Rollyson booted the ball toward the goal, but Emily Pratt was able to record the save.
Over the next couple of minutes, Renkin and Tandy Banks each took shots to increase the vistors' lead, but Tuggle was up to the challenge, saving both attempts.
The Bulldogs were unable to put another shot on frame until the 35th minute when rookie Chelsea Hearne's header nearly found the back of the net for a 1-1 tie. However, at the last second, Pratt was able to make a spectacular play on the ball to preserve the 1-0 lead for UNCW.
At the 37:22 mark, Renkin launched another shot that turned into her second goal of the match for a 2-0 lead. Renkin's shot came from 15 yards out and went just over the outstretched arms of Tuggle for an insurance goal.
Melissa Battista tried to get GWU on the scoreboard in the 57th minute but her shot was thwarted by Pratt, which was virtually the Bulldogs' best chance to score in the half.
For the match, the two teams each tallied nine shots. UNCW placed six shots on frame to three for GWU.
Pratt recorded a shutout while stopping all three Bulldogs' attempts. Tuggle notched four saves in the loss.
"We played well tonight," head coach Kevin Mounce said. "We need to start scoring, but overall it was a very good effort from our team."
The Bulldogs return to action next Saturday when they host
Florida Gulf Coast at 1 p.m. at Greene-Harbison Stadium.
