Women's Tennis Has Good Showing at Brevard Invitational
September 11, 2008 | Women's Tennis
The Lady Netters tightened up their strings and headed to
Brevard College last weekend for some fall tennis action. Amongst
the teams playing in the Invitational were West Virginia, Georgia
Southern, North Greenville, Brevard, Charleston Southern,
Presbyterian, Carson Newman, and Gardner-Webb.
In doubles action, junior Laura Kriett and sophomore Rita Gouveia
teamed up for the A Draw. The Bulldog duo played well, but fell in
the first round to Charleston Southern 8-5.
Senior Jenny Gomez and freshman Tavenner Black teamed up for the
first time to try their luck at the Doubles B Draw. This decision
turned out to be a good one, as the Bulldog duo advanced all the
way to the Semifinal round after defeating Presbyterian 8-2 in the
first, and Carson Newman 8-4 in the second. Gomez and Black fought
hard in their Semifinal match, but fell to West Virginia 8-6.
In the C Draw, Coach Corn sent out Nicole Scates and Allie Mills to
represent GWU. Mills and Scates won their first match, 8-3, over
North Greenville, but fell to West Virginia in the Quarterfinals,
8-6.
In singles action, both Gomez and Kriett played in the A Draw.
Kriett fell in her first match (6-1, 6-2) to WVU's Pilsbury, but
Gomez had different plans. Gomez downed her first round opponent
(6-0, 6-0) and received a bye in the second round.
In the third round, Gomez defeated Georgia Southern's Maddox (6-1,
6-7, 10-4) to advance to the Finals. In the Championship match,
Gomez lost the first set 3-6, but battled back in the second for a
6-3 set win of her own to force another set. In the final set
Gomez had her serve broke and eventually fell to GSU's Kegereis
(6-3, 3-6, 6-4).
Despite the loss, it was a great showing for Gomez who could be
playing #2 or #3 for the Bulldogs this season.
The A Draw wasn't the only draw the Lady Netters shown bright at.
Senior Amy Beavers played well enough in the B Draw to advance to
the Finals match as well. Beavers won her first round match 6-1,
6-1, won a tie breaker in the second round, and won her third round
match 6-4, 6-2, in route to the Finals on Sunday afternoon.
Beavers continued to play tough in the Finals, but West Virginia's
Elkin seemed to have one better. After two long sets Elkin was
the eventual winner, winning 6-4, 7-6 to take the B Draw. Elkin
also downed Gouveia in the Semifinal round (6-4, 5-7, 10-7).
Black also had a good showing, advancing to the Semifinal match of
the C Draw. She won the first set 6-4, but GSU's Fuller battled
back in the second winning 6-0 and later won the tiebreaker 10-2 to
advance to the Finals. Junior Kasey Ellis fell in the second round
after an injury caused her to forfeit.
