Men's Soccer Falls to Appalachian State in Double Overtime
September 13, 2008 | Men's Soccer
The
Gardner-Webb men's soccer team fell, 0-1, to Appalachian State
Friday evening at the Winthrop Classic. The Mountaineers scored the
winning goal off a rebound with only three seconds to go in the
second overtime period. The loss marks four in a row by a one-goal
margin, three coming in OT.
The Bulldogs actually did a good job holding off the Mountaineers as long as they did. Appalachian State out-shot Gardner-Webb 17-4 in the match, 10-3 in regulation. Senior goalkeeper Dane Geraci tallied seven saves on the night, and would have had eight if not for the rebound off the post. With his performance, Geraci may have established a starting role for the Bulldogs' future matches.
Gardner-Webb's offense couldn't seem to get going at all Friday evening. The Bulldogs only had one shot on goal out of four chances. With the lack of offense, all of the pressure fell upon the defense, which did an excellent job in stopping the Mountaineers' attack time after time.
The Bulldogs back line did a better job as it forced 15 offsides penalties on ASU throughout the match.
The overtime loss drops the Bulldogs to 0-5 on the season. The last time the Bulldogs started off this slow was eight years ago when Gardner-Webb lost 10 in a row to start off the 2000 season. GWU finished that season 1-16.
Coach Setzer's team will look to change its fate Sunday afternoon against USC-Upstate at 12 pm. The Bulldogs lost last season's match-up 1-2.
