September 24, 2008 | Football
BOILING SPRINGS Gardner-Webb will host Southland
Conference power Sam Houston State on Saturday night in Ernest W.
Spangler Stadium, with kickoff set for 6 pm ET.
The Bearkats (1-1) will be playing their first FCS opponent of the
season, and are on the cusp of the subdivision's top-25, after
hammering Division II East Central in the opener and hanging close
with No. 19 Kansas last week before falling, 38-14, in
Lawrence.
Gardner-Webb (2-1) is riding a two-game win streak, which includes
back-to-back 31-point performances by the offense in victories over
Division II Tusculum and OVC member Austin Peay. The Runnin'
Bulldogs will be playing their first game against a team from Texas
since Stephen F. Austin topped the Dogs by a 31-10 count on
Nov. 9, 1973 in the NAIA Poultry Bowl.
Saturday's game will be carried locally by WGWG-FM (88.3), with
Fabian Fuentes and Rusty Stroupe providing the call. The game has
also been selected as the Clear Channel FCS Game of the Week, with
a same-day, tape-delay broadcast set for 11 pm ET on Clear
Channel's Cincinnati affiliate, WCKY 1530 AM a 50,000-watt
AM signal that covers much of the eastern United States.
With its reach, 1530 AM can be heard on the Eastern Seabord from
Maine to Miami, Fla. and from Wisconsin to New Orleans, La.,
on the western side of its coverage map. Frank Santore and Coach
Dave Fagg will provide the call on WCKY.
Saturday's game will pit one of the nation's top offenses
statistically against one of the early national leaders on the
defensive side. Sam Houston State, quarterbacked by former Oklahoma
starter Rhett Bomar, ranks No. 14 nationally in total offense
(429.50 ypg) and in scoring offense (36.0 ppg), while Gardner-Webb
ranks No. 13 nationally in total defense (272.0 ypg) and No. 20 in
scoring defense (18.3 ppg).
