
Sam Houston State Tops GWU, 49-33, Saturday Night

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. Rhett Bomar passed for 340 yards
and five touchdowns, and ran for another to lead Sam Houston State
to a 49-33 win at Gardner-Webb.
The Bearkats (2-1) opened up a 21-10 lead after one quarter, and
led 42-10 at the half, as Bomar threw for 323 of his yards before
the break. Gardner-Webb (2-2) answered an opening touchdown drive
to tie the game, 7-7, quickly using a 46-yard reverse by
Dobson Collins to set up a two-yard plunge by Brandon Jackson.
Sam Houston State pulled away from there, getting two passes from
Bomar to running back James Aston for scores a two-yard run
by Aston with 12:00 remaining before halftime to push the lead to
28-10, and two more scoring strikes from Bomar before the
break.
Bomar ran 17 yards for his final score with 13:28 left in the third
quarter, and sat the rest of the night. Gardner-Webb played evenly
the rest of the way, and outscored the Kats 17-0 in the final
quarter to make the score more respectable by the final horn.
Sam Houston State had 374 yards on 61 plays offensively (24
rushing), as Gardner-Webb controlled the clock in the final half
while playing catchup. GWU managed 81 plays on offense for 339
yards, with Stan Doolittle going 24-for-39 for 192 yards and a
score. Dobson Collins caught seven passes for 51 yards and finished
with 99 all-purpose yards on the evening.
Gardner-Webb rushing attack, which had been a strength in
two-straight wins, managed just 77 yards on 33 carries Saturday
night, with Collins (one carry, 46 yards) the leading rusher.
Freshman kicker Ryan Gates put on a show for Gardner-Webb, banging
in four field goals in four chances, from 42, 47, 22 and 26 yards
and hitting all three of his PATs for 15 of the Bulldogs' 33
points.
Justin Wells was the top target for Bomar, catching five balls for
96 yards and a touchdown. Chris Brown paced the defense, with eight
hits and 2.5 sacks.
Gardner-Webb will travel to Charleston Southern on Saturday, Oct.
4, to open Big South Conference play at 1:30 pm ET. The Bucs
pounded North Greenville, 27-0, Saturday afternoon. Sam Houston
State is idle.
