
Matykowski And Wilcox Pick Up Big South Honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Senior Katie Matykowski was named the Big South's Libero of the Week while newcomer Laura Wilcox earned her third New Balance Freshman of the Week honor, as announced by the league's office earlier today for matches played Sept. 22-28.
Matykowski, a defensive specialist from Sun Prairie, Wis., amassed 39 digs, 22 of which came during the Bulldogs' first-ever win over Winthrop. Matykowski posted 4.88 digs per set, helping GWU win its first two Big South matches in school history. During her 17-dig performance at Presbyterian, her 12th dig resulted in GWU's career digs record. She also notched a kill in the contest.
Wilcox, a middle blocker from Normal, Ill., finished the weekend with 24 kills (3.0 kills per set). She played a big part in the Bulldogs' two victories last week. In the win over Presbyterian, she totaled 11 kills, 10 digs and four blocks. Against Winthrop, she shined in front of the home crowd, slamming home 13 kills to go along with seven digs and three blocks in the 3-2 win over the Eagles. For the week, she hit .304 while earning her third Freshman of the Week honor of the season.
The Bulldogs hit the road for two matches this week. GWU will
travel to Lynchburg, Va., for a 7 p.m., showdown Friday night
before heading to Radford to take on the Highlanders Saturday at 2
p.m.
