Gulf Coast Blanks Bulldogs, 1-0
September 06, 2008 | Women's Soccer
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team fell, 1-0, to the Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast Saturday afternoon at Greene-Harbison Stadium. The shutout marks three in a row for the Bulldogs at home this season.
The Bulldogs fall to 1-3 on the year while FGCU improves to 4-1.
Saturday afternoon's game was a tough match for both teams, playing in temperatures reaching the low 90's. The heat, mixed with all of the humidity, didn't allow much action in the first half of play. Only five shots were taken in the first half between the two teams (GWU-3, FGCU-2). Four of those shots were on goal and all four were saved by each team's respective goalkeeper.
The Eagles broke the scoring drought in the 66th minute when Lindsey Haw stuffed home a nice cross by Gina Petracco from the left side. Haw's goal turned out to be the game-winner as FGCU held off Gardner-Webb's late surge.
For the match, GWU managed just five shots, two of which came after the intermission, while the visitors fired off eight.
The Bulldogs' shots on goal were taken by rookie Megan Reimer, Melissa Battista, Kasey Gladhill and Paige Regan.
The Bulldogs travel to Boone, N.C. for their next match against
Appalachian State on Tuesday, September 9th at 4 pm.
