Men's Soccer Falls to Dolphins, 3-2
September 06, 2008 | Men's Soccer
The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team fell to the Dolphins of Jacksonville, 3-2, Friday night at the Ashley Sports Complex. Jacksonville matched GWU with two goals in the second half despite playing two men down due to red card ejections. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 0-3-0 on the year.
The Dolphins scored the first goal of the match off the foot of sophomore Wesley Lartev. Lartev received a pass into the box from Ramak Niakan and placed it nicely past a diving Dane Geraci, who just came back after sitting out a couple games with an injury.
Shortly after the goal, Jacksonville received two red card ejections; which forced them to play the rest of the match two men down. Despite the two-man advantage, the match would stay at 1-0 heading into halftime.
Almost 15 minutes into the second half, newcomer Matt Niescierowicz evened the match at 1-1 with his first goal of the season. However, JU scored less than a minute later to take back a one-goal lead. Transfer Tony Taylor put the Dolphins up 2-1 with his first goal of the season for JU.
Taylor didn't stop there. He later scored again, despite the Bulldogs' two-man advantage, to put the Dolphins up 3-1.
Even though they were down 3-1, the Bulldogs didn't lay down. A little senior leadership was shown in the 79th minute when Bradley Morrison gathered up a lose ball in front of the JU net and shot it home to put the score at 3-2.
GWU stayed on the attack, but time proved to be too short. The Dolphins held off Gardner-Webb's late surge and prevailed with a 3-2 win at home to improve to 1-2-0 on the season. The loss drops Gardner-Webb to 0-3-0.
The Bulldogs will stay in Jacksonville until Sunday where they will face North Florida. After the UNF match, the Bulldogs will take a week off to prepare for the Winthrop Tournament (Sept. 12-14) where they will play Appalachian St. and USC-Upstate.
