Wrestling Wins 1 of 3 in Bulldog Duals

The Gardner-Webb wrestling team managed to win its first match Saturday morning, 40-10, over Spartanburg Methodist College. Leading the Bulldogs to victory was senior Chas Franz and red-shirt junior Courtney Roberts who both recorded first-round pins against the Pioneers.
Sophomore Randall Herring started the match off right for the Bulldogs, recording a 10-2 major decision win at 174. His match was followed by another Bulldog win, as Alex Piasecki won by forfeit at 184.
After a slip by Gardner-Webb at 197, red-shirt junior Dustin Porter got the Bulldogs back on track with a 8-5 decision win at heavyweight.
Roberts one-upped Porter in the next match, pinning his opponent at the 1:38 mark of the first round. Franz followed soon after with a stunning pin as time expired in the first as well.
Gardner-Webb went on to win the next three, two by forfeit and a nice 11-5 decision win by Justin Guthrie at 157.
The Bulldogs' weren't as fortunate in their second match-up, falling to the Duke Blue Devils 31-15. Red-shirt junior Rob Tate gained a victory at 141 by pinning his opponent Nick Adamo at the 1:27 mark of the first period. The pin marked the second on the day by the Bulldogs in the 141 lb. weight class.
Red-shirt sophomore Thomas Knapp also recorded a pin against Duke. Knapp managed a nice reversal and took down Duke's Mike Bell at the 1:26 mark of the first period. Porter rounded out the Bulldogs' three wins with a 3-0 decision at heavyweight.
The Bulldogs' Dave Sweeney and Alex Piasecki both had close matches against the Devils but were unable to gain the close decisions.
Gardner-Webb's final match came against the Eastern Michigan Eagles at 2 pm. The Bulldogs fell in the last match of the evening 38-6, as the Eagles were able to take 8 of the 10 individual matches.
Red-shirt juniors Tate and Porter notched two decision wins for the Bulldogs; Tate going 2-0 and Porter 3-0 on the day.
Eastern Michigan won two events on the day, but the story was the Duke Blue Devils, as they went 3-0 against the competition.
The Bulldogs will be back in action next Saturday (Feb. 7) at the East Regional Duals in Pittsburgh, Pa.
