Boiling Springs, N.C. - Five different Bulldog players scored on Saturday afternoon, as Gardner-Webb ran past the Eagles of Georgia Southern, winning the match 5-2 in non-conference play.
With the win the Bulldogs move to 6-3-1 overall, while the Eagles
fall to 0-9-1 overall with the loss.
Georgia Southern got the scoring going in the 32nd minute, as
Aleksandar Tomic put a header into the back of the net off a corner
kick to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Gardner-Webb answered in a big way, as the Bulldogs scored two
goals in less than a minute to take a 2-1 lead into the halftime
intermission.
Sophomore Richie Wall picked up his first goal as a Bulldog in the
40th minute, as Wall picked up a rebound off the crossbar and
blasted a shot past the Georgia Southern keeper Mike Gubosh to tie
the score up at 1-1.
Less than a minute later, freshman John Sargent scored his third
goal of the season as he found a hole in the Eagles defense and
fired a shot past the keeper to put the Bulldogs up 2-1.
Just like in the first half, the Eagles got on the board first in
the second frame as in the 60th minute Austin Steele capitalized on
a missed played ball in the box and put a shot past GWU keeper
Andrew Robinson to knot the score up at 2-2.
Yet the Bulldogs struck again, as in the 72nd minute
redshirt-senior Jordan Gaines got is head on a Gerard Hefferon
pass, getting enough on the ball to put it past the goal line and
into the back of the net to give GWU the 3-2 lead.
However, the Bulldogs would not stop there, as Gardner-Webb added
two more insurance goals, one by Hefferon in the 78th minute and
another by junior Romeo Kabanda in the 85th minute, to put the
match away at 5-2.
As a team, the Bulldogs outshot the Eagles 24-12 for the match,
putting 15 of its 24 shots on target.
GWU's Trent Kozman and Robinson combined to pick up five saves for
the Bulldogs in goal, while GSU's Gubosh had eight stops over the
90 minutes of play.
The five goals on Saturday afternoon ties the most goals that the
Bulldogs have scored in a single-match thus far this season,
matching its 5-1 win over Covenant on September 4th.
The Bulldogs will return to the road and conference play for its
next match, as GWU will travel to Lexington, Va. to face off with
the VMI Keydets on Wednesday afternoon, October 14th, at 4 p.m.
