October 14, 2009 | Men's Soccer
Lexington, Va. - On a frigid and rainy afternoon, the Bulldogs struggled offensively and failed to find the back of the net, falling to the VMI Keydets 2-0 in Lexington, Va.
With the loss the Bulldogs fall to 6-4-1 overall and 2-3-1 in
conference play, while VMI improves to 2-8-1 and 1-1 in Big South
action.
The Bulldogs, who have lost its last two conference matches,
appeared to be affected by the weather conditions, as VMI outshot
the Bulldogs 21-11 for the match, while the Bulldogs put only three
shots on target.
GWU trailed for most of the match, as the VMI Keydets took an early
1-0 lead in the 17th minute. Gardner-Webb keeper Trent Kozman
passed the ball out to the defense, yet it was VMI's Forrest Moul
who came up with the ball. Moul then lofted a high arching shot
over Kozman's head to put the Keydets up 1-0.
Over the rest of the opening half, the Bulldogs had three
opportunities to score halted, as freshman John Sargent had a shot
attempt blocked in the 18th minute, while redshirt-senior and GWU
leading goal-scorer Gerard Hefferon put two shots on target over a
five-minute stretch only to have them stopped by VMI keeper Brian
Sowell.
In the second half both teams misfired on a handful of chances in
the early minutes, yet it would be VMI who got on the board again,
this time by way of a header by David Rochow in the 73rd minute,
putting the ball in the top right corner of the goal to give the
Keydets a 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs' shots were off-target all night, as three shots
sailed either wide or high in the final 20 minutes of play, giving
the Keydets the 2-0 shutout victory.
VMI's Sowell picked up the shutout win, recording three stops for
the match on 11 Bulldog shots, while GWU's Kozman suffered the loss
despite picking up eight saves on 21 VMI shots.
Hefferon led the Bulldog attack with four shots, two of which were
on goal, while junior Adam Augruso fired three shots, putting one
on frame.
Coach Setzer's squad, who has lost its last two road contests after
starting out 3-0 away from home, will look to rebound in its road
match on Saturday night at UNC Greensboro. The non-conference
match is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
