October 21, 2009 | Men's Soccer
Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb's two leading scorers both scored a goal and picked up an assist in the Bulldogs 2-1 come back win over Liberty on Tuesday night at Greene-Harbison Field.
With the win the Bulldogs improve to 7-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in
conference play, while the loss drops the Flames to 6-3-3 overall
and 1-1-2 in the Big South.
In what was a defensive battle for the majority of the match,
neither team could get on the scoreboard in the opening half, with
the Bulldogs taking a slight 5-4 shot advantage over the first 45
minutes of play.
The action picked up in the second half, as Liberty broke through
first in the 47th minute taking a 1-0 lead on a Phillip Aseweh
goal. On the goal, Darren Amoo put a shot on goal, which GWU
goalkeeper Trent Kozman jumped up and made the save only to have
the rebounded ball find the head of Liberty's Aseweh who's header
got past Kozman for the first score of the match.
The Liberty goal appeared to have woken up the Gardner-Webb
offense, as less than two minutes later Gerard Hefferon picked up
his eighth goal of the season to knot the score up at 1-1.
The Bulldogs tied the score up as sophomore Jon Ole Reinhardsen
dropped the ball off to Romeo Kabanda who then played the ball into
the center of the box where Hefferon headed the ball past the
Liberty keeper Andrew Madero for the goal.
The game-winning goal would come late in the match, as in the 84th
minute it was Hefferon helping to assist, passing the ball to
freshman John Sargent who found an open Kabanda. Kabanda lined up,
aimed and blasted a shot into the back of the goal, giving the
Bulldogs the 2-1 lead with less than six minutes remaining in the
match.
Kabanda's fifth goal of the season proved to be enough as the
Bulldogs held off Liberty in the closing minutes to pick up the 2-1
conference win.
For the match, the Bulldogs had 15 shots, putting five on goal,
while Liberty recorded 12 shots, putting four of those on
frame.
GWU's Kozman got the win, as the junior picked up three stops over
the 90 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs will have a week off before they will host the
UNC-Asheville Bulldogs on Wednesday, October 28th, at 7 p.m. That
match is slated to be video broadcast by the Big South Network and
