
Gardner-Webb Routs Southern Virginia, 65-0, Saturday Night

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - David Montgomery had a 73-yard touchdown reception and a 74-yard touchdown run Saturday night to help Gardner-Webb rout Southern Virginia, 65-0, Saturday night.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (5-2) out gained the NAIA's Knights (1-7) 633-91 and averaged 9.8 yards per play offensively on the evening.
Montgomery started the scoring after a blocked punt on Southern Virginia's first drive, catching a nine-yard swing pass from Stan Doolittle for a 7-0 edge. Chris James returned an interception 50 yards for a score and Gardner-Webb led 34-0 at the break.
Doolittle went 17-of-22 for 205 yards and three touchdowns in just one half of action. Montgomery rushed nine times for 123 yards and a 74-yard touchdown and caught three passes for 93 yards and two scores - the final on a short swing pass that he turned into a 73-yard dash just 32 seconds into the third quarter.
Kenny Little rushed 12 times for 85 yards, and Brandon Jackson split time between running back and quarterback to rush for 68 yards on 14 carries to pace a ground game that totaled a season-best 335 yards on 40 carries. Quarterback John Rock came off the bench to complete 4-of-6 passes for 93 yards, and added a 52-yard touchdown run.
Defensively, GWU did not allow the Knights to invade the red zone, limiting SVU to 36 rushing yards on 26 carries and only 91 yards on 55 plays (six first downs).
Marty Patterson led the charge from linebacker, totaling 10 tackles (six solo), 4.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks in one half and one series of action. Garrett Trusler contributed a career-high seven tackles off the bench.
The shutout was the first for Gardner-Webb in 52 games, the last coming on Nov. 13, 2004 at Charleston Southern (18-0 win).
Quinton Garrus gained 41 yards on 14 carries to pace Southern Virginia.
Gardner-Webb returns to Big South Conference play next weekend, hosting first-place Stony Brook (4-4, 3-0 Big South) in a crucial league battle. Kickoff is set for 1:30 pm at Norman Harris Field at Spangler Stadium.
