Gardner-Webb Defeats UNC Asheville 1-0 On Senior Day, Earning Mounce His 100th Victory as GWU Head Coach

BOILING SPRINGS, NC- On what was a chilly afternoon at Greene-Harbison Field, the Gardner-Webb women's soccer team defeated UNC Asheville 1-0 on what was Senior Day. The win also gave head coach Kevin Mounce his 100th
victory at Gardner-Webb.
The match was evenly contested throughout, but the Lady Bulldogs were able to get a goal early in the second half following a free kick by sophomore Stephanie Benshoof in which an UNCA player actually made contact with the ball, putting it past UNCA goalkeeper Megan Dent. Benshoof was credited with the goal.
Sophomore Chelsea Hearne played a great match in goal for Gardner-Webb, shutting out UNCA, earning five saves along the way.
Sunday's match was the last home match for the 2009 senior class of Jessica Tuggle, Jillian Dean, Brooke Bull, Karissa Jensen, Bailey Stevens, and Kasey Gladhill.
Gardner-Webb improves to 11-7-0 on the season, and 5-2-0 in Big South Conference play. UNC Asheville falls to 4-9-1 overall and 1-6-0 in conference play.
The victory gives Kevin Mounce his 100th victory as Gardner-Webb's head coach. Since arriving at Gardner-Webb in 1999, Mounce has won more games than any coach in Gardner-Webb women's soccer history. The 11 wins this season are the most the team has had since the 2001 season, in which the squad went 15-6-1.
Gardner-Webb hits the road this weekend as they close out the regular season with matches at Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern. The match against Coastal Carolina takes place Thursday night at 6:00 PM and the match against Charleston Southern takes place Sunday evening at 7:00 PM.
