Bulldogs Host UNCA On Wednesday Night; Will Recognize Seniors and Honor Jordan Traylor On Saturday Night as Part of Homecoming/Alumni Weekend
October 26, 2009 | Men's Soccer
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's soccer will have a very busy week, as the Bulldogs will host two matches, UNCA on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. and Appalachian State on Saturday night at 6 p.m., and will hold two special events during Saturday night's match as part of Homecoming/Alumni Weekend.
Gardner-Webb (7-5-1, 3-3-1 Big South) is coming off a 2-1 win over
Liberty, its second win over the Flames in 11 tries since 1987.
GWU, who was led by its top two goal scorers in Gerard Hefferon and
Romeo Kabanda, was the first team to score on the Flames in
conference play en route to picking up its third conference victory
of the season.
Wednesday night's "Battle of the Bulldogs" should prove to be a
very exciting match from start to finish, as both teams look to
finish its conference regular season slate on a high note.
Last season the Runnin' Bulldogs defeated UNCA in Asheville, N.C.,
2-1 on October 15th. However, UNCA got its revenge on November
13th, as the UNCA Bulldogs upended GWU 4-2 in the first round of
the 2008 Big South Conference Men's Soccer Championship
Tournament.
This time around it will be the GWU Bulldogs looking for some
revenge, as UNCA ended the Bulldogs 2008 season.
UNCA, who is 6-7-2 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play this year,
holds the all-time series record over GWU at 7-4-1.
Wednesday night's match will be video broadcast over the Big South
Network and can be viewed by going to www.bigsouthsports.com.
On Saturday night, Senior Night, the Bulldogs will recognize its
three seniors - Jordan Gaines, Gerard Hefferon and Mark Webster -
prior to the 6 p.m. kick off against the Appalachian State
Mountaineers.
During the halftime of the match, the Gardner-Webb family will
honor a fallen Bulldog, as former GWU student-athlete Jordan
Traylor will have his No. 16 retired. Traylor, who died
unexpectedly in December 2008, played for the Bulldogs from
2003-2007.
"Jordan embodied everything that we want in a men's soccer player
and a student-athlete," commented Head Coach Tony Setzer. "Jordan
was loyal, committed hard working and a quality student-athlete and
person both on and off the field. He is and will always be held in
high-esteem among his peers, former teammates and in the
Gardner-Webb men's soccer family."
Gardner-Webb is 1-3-0 all-time versus the Mountaineers, yet have
dropped the last two matches against Appalachian State.
Every week throughout the 2009 men's soccer season, the
Gardner-Webb athletic media relations' office will produce game
notes featuring the upcoming contests and reviewing the previous
matches.
