GWU Women's Basketball To Host Winston-Salem State Monday Night at 6 p.m.
November 16, 2009 | Women's Basketball
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's basketball team will look to bounce back from its season opening loss tonight, as the Lady Bulldogs will play host to the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State at 6 p.m. in Paul Porter Porter Arena.
Monday night's contest at Paul Porter Arena will be a battle
between two teams who are both coming off double-digit losses in
their season openers. Gardner-Webb is coming off a 86-64 loss to
the Houston Cougars, while Winston-Salem State is looking to bounce
back from a 71-26 loss at Liberty.
Tip off is slated for 6 p.m. in Paul Porter Arena on the campus of Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The Lady Rams return 10 players, including four starters, from last
year's team that finished 6-23 overall. WSSU returns its top-three
scorers in MaLisa Bumpus (12.2 ppg), Rene Rector (10.1 ppg) and
Vontisha Woods (9.9 ppg) from last season. The Lady Rams suffered
an extremely cold shooting night in its season opener, as WSSU shot
26.2 percent from the floor and only scored 26 points in its loss
to Liberty on November 13th. Winston-Salem State was also
outrebounded by 14 boards (39-25) in the loss and connected on
1-of-12 shot attempts from three-point range.
It was another story of two different halves for the Lady Bulldogs
in its 86-64 loss to Houston in its season opener on November 13th,
as GWU kept the game close for the first 20 minutes of play,
shooting 34.3 percent from the field and forcing Houston to commit
10 turnovers, to trail by just three at 37-34 at the half.
However, the second half was much different, as GWU shot only 28.1
percent from the field, committed eight turnovers to the Cougars
three and sent Houston the free throw line 30 times in the final 20
minutes of play. Houston outscored GWU 49-30 in the second half,
using a 15-6 run out of the halftime break to pull away early.
