
Gardner-Webb Uses Bench To Sprint Past Montreat, 89-62, Monday Night

BOILING SPRINGS - David Brown and Stefon Johnson combined for 26
points off the bench to lead Gardner-Webb to a decisive, 89-62, win
over Montreat College Monday night at Paul Porter Arena.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (2-0) scored 43 points off of 23 Montreat
turnovers, and netted 53 points in the paint. Gardner-Webb led just
40-31 at the break, but opened the second half on a 16-6 run to put
the game away.
Brown, a 6-foot-2 transfer from Broward College, scored 10 of his
15 points in the opening half, and made 6-of-10 shots on the night
(3-of-6 from three-point range). Johnson, a 6-foot-6 freshman
forward from Cincinnati, scored 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting,
blocked three shots and had two steals in 28 minutes. Freshman
point guard Brian McNair came off the bench to score seven points
and dish off seven assists to only one turnover - sparking a 47-18
edge in bench scoring for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Jonathan Moore and C.J. Hailey each had 13 points for the 'Dogs,
who shot 48.0 percent (36-of-75) for the game - but an
uncharacteristic 31.0 percent from long distance (9-of-29).
Gardner-Webb held a dominant 52-29 edge on the glass, scoring 25
second-chance points against the Cavaliers.
Forward Josh Henley paced the rebounding effort for Gardner-Webb,
hauling down 12, and center Auryn MacMillan collected nine caroms
to go with seven points.
Montreat (1-4) did find its range from deep, hitting 11 three-point
shots, but shot just 42.3 percent overall from the floor. Matt
Rushing's 14 points led four players in double figures. Rushing
also had six assists and four rebounds.
Gardner-Webb will return to action at home on Saturday, hosting
Methodist (N.C.) at 7 pm ET in Paul Porter Arena. The game will air
live on WGWG-FM (88.3) and will be carried by the Big South
Network's video streaming package (bigsouthsports.com).
