GWU Volleyball To Take On Liberty On Thursday Afternoon in First Round of 2009 Big South Volleyball Championship

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb will enter the 2009 Big South Volleyball Championship Tournament as the No. 7 seed and will take on the No. 2 seeded Liberty Lady Flames on Thursday, November 19th, at 12 p.m. in the first round of the postseason tournament.
Thursday afternoon's first round match up between the Gardner-Webb
Lady Bulldogs and the Liberty Lady Flames will mark the second
straight year in which these two teams have faced off in the
opening round of the Big South Volleyball Championship
Tournament.
In the first round of last year's tournament, the Lady Bulldogs
first ever Big South Tournament, Gardner-Webb struggled to find its
rhythm, as Liberty defeated GWU 25-15, 25-19, and 25-15 to advance
to the semifinal round.
In the two regular season battles this season, the two matches were
polar opposites yet ended with the same final result. In the first
meeting on October 9th, GWU took the first two sets to take a 2-0
match lead at home. However, Liberty got hot late and stormed back
to win the final three sets to pick up the 3-2 match victory.
In the second match up in Lynchburg, Va. on November 7th, a
questionable call late in the second set proved to lead to the
unraveling of the Lady Bulldogs, as GWU fell in three sets.
History is not on the side of the Lady Bulldogs, as the Lady Flames
hold the all-time overall series advantage, as Gardner-Webb is
winless in six matches against Liberty since moving to Division I
in 2000-01.
The winner of the first round match will go on to play in the first
semifinal match on Friday, November 20th, at 4:30 p.m.
