GWU Wrestling Hits the Mat For the First Time This Season At the Hokie Open On Sunday, November 8th

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb wrestling team will jump start its 2009-10 season on Sunday, November 8th, as the Bulldogs will compete in the Hokie Open hosted by Virginia Tech University.
Gardner-Webb was ranked 52nd overall with the likes of Oregon State
and Utah Valley in the Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine 2009-10
Preseason Division I Tournament Power Index.
The Bulldogs have high expectations this season and should be led
by a returner in redshirt-senior Dustin Porter and in a newcomer in
redshirt-freshman Richie Spicel, as both were named as top
challengers in their respective classes by Wrestling USA
Magazine.
However, the rest of the Gardner-Webb roster is full of talent,
both new faces and old faces make up the mix. Look for returners
such as junior Matthew Featherston, redshirt-senior David Pelsang,
redshirt-junior Jonathon Velzaquez, sophomore Blake Salyer and
others to have big seasons for the Red and Black this season.
Some newcomers that could make an impact right away for Coach Wince
and his squad are junior transfer Michael Slaughter, freshman Marc
Rocha and redshirt-freshmen Alex and Ryan Medved.
The Hokie Open will begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday and will be held in
Salem, Va.
Every week throughout the 2009 men's soccer season, the
Gardner-Webb athletic media relations' office will produce game
notes featuring the upcoming contests and reviewing the previous
matches.
